Situated at the foot of the Atlas mountains, the imperial city of Marrakech is large, noisy and filled of different smells. But Marrakech is also fascinating, full of history and just beautiful. It is a city that sums up all of Morocco's exotic North African charm. Within the hustle of the city core you'll find old and new clashing and blending, which can make some tourists almost dizzy. Snake charmers and smooth shop touts both compete for your attention among a noisy, colourful bustle that encapsulates Morocco's vibrant soul.
The city's name provided the root for the name of the country itself, spelling out this town's importance down the ages. Marrakech was founded in 1062 by Sultan Youssef ben Tachfine, who is credited with defensive construction of the walls around the city.
Extended to 19 kms during the dynasties of the Almohades and Saadiens, the spectacular city walls, varying in colour between pink and red, are accented by 200 square towers and nine monumental gates. The prosperity of Marrakech at this time made it a fitting capital for an empire which stretched from Algiers to the Atlantic and from the Mediterranean almost to Senegal.
For shoppers this city is famous as a frenzied hub for bargain hunting. For history lovers the many museums and monuments are some of the country's not to be missed star attractions. And for those who just want to dive into local culture, the Medina (old city) offers Moroccan life in all its hectic glory. Marrakesh is also the gateway to Morocco High Atlas region where possible relish the scenic mountain beauty after Marrakesh metropolis adventures.
