Ko Phi Phi is a small archipelago of six islands, the biggest of them are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, in Krabi Province, Southern Thailand. It is touted to be one of the most beautiful yet easily accessible island groups in the world. The entire region is a part of a marine National Park. From archaeological discoveries, it is believed that the area was one of the oldest communities in Thailand dating back to the prehistoric period. The name Phi Phi (pronounced ‘pee pee’) originates from Malay, the original name for the islands was "Pulao Pi ah Pi". The name refers to the mangrove wood found there.
One of the most instantly recognizable tropical islands in the world, Phi Phi Don positively shines with beauty. With its azure-and-green-to-turquoise waters and its gorgeous flora, if there were an island beauty contest Phi Phi would be Miss World. Phi Phi Don is a part from the narrow isthmus that straddles the middle of the ''dumbell'' shape. It's pretty much uninhabited and rife with verdant jungle and hills.
Before 1999's Phi Phi Leh was an enigmatic and uninhabited island near to Phi Phi Don. Nowadays it carries a mystique that's hard to shake off. Such is the power of Hollywood (here was filmed "The Beach" with Leonardo diCaprio) but few stop to realize that it still is an outstandingly beautiful island with wonderful snorkeling opportunities and breathtaking views. Phi Phi Leh is a must-see for all ages.
